What is Math Pentathlon?
The Mathematics Pentathlon is a program of interactive problem-solving games which:

• Develops Active Problem Solving: resolve problems that are continually undergoing change.
• Integrates 3 Types of Mathematical Reasoning: spatial, computational, and logical
• Stimulates "Right Brain" Thought: creative thinking, spatial visualization and reasoning

Does your child enjoy math?  Does he or she enjoy playing strategy games like checkers, chess, Connect 4 and Blokus?  Does your child enjoy learning games and competing against others?  Your child might enjoy Math Pentathlon!  We meet on Tuesdays after school (see specific dates below).  Our coaches are parents just like you and we also need a few volunteers each Tuesday to help set up/take down games as well as supervise game play and answer questions.  You can find game objectives and rules on the MP Institute website and if you listen while the coach(es) is explaining the game, you can learn right along with the kids!

Clayton has a very strong Math Pentathlon program.  Not only were we crowned National Champions in 2008, but we always have many medalist and hall-of-fame winners each year.  We have a great time in Math Pentathlon.  Many kids begin in Kindergarten and never drop out.  However, this also means that some kids who want to get on the team don’t get the opportunity.  Because MP at Clayton is an after-school activity which is completely volunteer-run, we are able to accommodate just one class (20 kids) at each grade level.

Registration Information
Spring Pentathletes and their siblings are given priority registration for the following school year.  Kindergarten registration information will be distributed during Kindergarten Round-up.  After the current MP student registration deadline, any open spots will be offered to those on the wait-list.  Please be aware that sometimes the wait list is entirely boys, but the only open spots are for girls.  If wait list students can not fill the open slots, we will go to open registration.  This will be announced via the Clayton Weekly. One of the factors we will consider when registering a new MP student is the parent’s ability to volunteer. Each grade must have enough weekly volunteers to support a consistent learning environment. Our Math Pentathlon parents are amazing!  We have several grandparent volunteers and a few babysitter/nanny volunteers each year too!

The Fall 2011 team is currently full. If you would like to be placed on the wait list, please send a message to claytonmathpentathlon@gmail.com. Please include your child's name, gender, current grade, parent/guardian name, and contact email.

• 2009 – Texas Champions (Highest score of all schools competing in Texas)

• 2011 - Second Place in the State of Texas
